Evaluation of Nomophobia and Problematic Internet Use in Nursing Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

Öz

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationships between nomophobia and problematic internet use with demographic data (gender, age, grades/academic year, telephone usage starting age, daily phone usage time, reason for common use of the telephone) and to assess the effect of nomophobia on problematic internet use in nursing students. Methods: The study was conducted in a cross-sectional and descriptive manner with 392 students studying in the nursing departments of two state universities located in the north and east of Turkey. Data for the study were collected between June and July 2024, with the aim of encompassing the entire population, without employing any sampling techniques. Descriptive Information Form, Nomophobia Scale and Problematic Internet Use Scale were used for data collection. In the evaluation of the data, t-test, ANOVA (posthoc Bonferroni) and linear regression analyses were used. Results: It was found that 78.1% of the participants were female and 75.8% had started using a mobile phone between the ages of 14 and 18. In addition, nomophobia had a positive (b = 0.360) and significant (p < 0.001) effect on problematic internet use, explaining 8.9% of the variance in problematic internet use (R² = 0.089). Conclusion: These findings highlight that nomophobia is an important factor contributing to problematic internet use among nursing students and emphasize the need for preventive strategies aimed at reducing the risk of problematic internet use.
