Preconceptional Health Care

Yıl 2021, Cilt: 4 Sayı: 2, 94 - 105, 16.09.2021

Öz

Preconceptional care is a service based on determining the physical, medical and psychosocial conditions that pose health risks before pregnancy and analyzing or directing them appropriately in order to reduce maternal-fetal mortality. This review was conducted to evaluate the content of preconceptional health care and to reveal its importance with research results. Preconceptional care; Includes fertility, paternal health, genetic counseling, chronic diseases and drugs used, sexually transmitted diseases, nutrition and body mass index, folic acid supplementation, tobacco, alcohol and substance use, exposure to teratogens, immunization, violence, mental health and economic status. Preconceptional care is significantly effective on fertility, congenital anomalies and preterm labor. Therefore, pregnancy should be ensured by improving preconceptional evaluation criteria. Nurses have the most important role and responsibility in providing preconceptional care to individuals in terms of improving maternal and fetal health, thus public health, providing early diagnosis and treatment opportunities, and providing lifelong positive health habits and behaviors to women and men. Nurses need to constantly renew their own knowledge and provide effective counseling services to individuals by identifying and removing barriers to the provision of care.
