In this study, taking refugee of a
young British women named Katy
Greenfield, who was kidnapped
by a Kurdish Iranian citizen named Mirza Aziz in the city of Savuçbulak within
the borders of Iran near the Ottoman Empire border in 1891, to the Consulate of
Ottoman State and the events that followed will be told. Although such incidents were common on the Ottoman-Iranian
border, which has a complex structure in terms of tribes in the region, both
states had to be directly involved in this case as it has included the Ottoman
consulate. The daughter of an British
family engaged in commerce in the region, Katy Greenfield, was kidnapped by
Mirza Aziz. According to Ottoman sources, the woman confessed it in the Iranian
court and became a Muslim and married Mirza Aziz. However,
her mother and the British consul in the region refused to accept the situation
and demanded her to be taken to court again. When the young girl was taken to
Tabriz for trial, she took refuge in Consulate of Ottoman in Savuçbulak. Following the young girl took refuge in the Ottoman
consulate, the British government put pressure on the Iranian and Ottoman
governments and demanded that the woman be handed over to her mother because of
the public interest in the British newspapers to the case. The process was prolonged due to the efforts of the Ottoman
consuls in the region and the resistance of the Kurdish tribes not to turn the
young woman, however Katy Greenfield was taken to the court and questioned for
the second time at the end. Katy
Greenfield stated that she became a Muslim and would marry Mirza Aziz as in the
first court. Although the British consul and her mother were reluctant, Katy
turned back to Mirza Aziz.
