Öz
Aim: This study aimed to determine the pre-discharge learning needs of patients undergoing kidney transplantation patients.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted between February 5 and December 31, 2022, in the renal transplantation clinics of two hospitals affiliated with a private healthcare group. The sample consisted of 103 patients who had undergone kidney transplantation surgery. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a Personal Information Form, the Pre-Transplantation Treatment/Care/Educational Status Information Form, and the Patient Learning Needs Scale. Ethical approval and written informed consent were obtained prior to data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Mann-Whitney U test, and the Kruskal-Wallis test with Jamovi software (Version 2.3).
Results: The mean age of participants was 43.7±12.52 years; 60.2% were male. The overall mean Patient Learning Needs Scale score was 221.8±29.61, indicating a high level of learning needs. Among the Patient Learning Needs Scale subscales, Treatment and Complications had the highest mean score (41.4±5.4). Statistically significant differences were observed between the Feelings Related to Condition Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, it was observed that subscale scores and participants’ COVID-19 status (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Patients undergoing kidney transplantation demonstrated high pre-discharge learning needs, particularly regarding treatment and potential complications. These findings highlight the importance of structured, individualized, and holistic discharge education and counseling programs to support self-care and long-term adaptation after transplantation.
