Factors Associated with Self-Efficacy in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients and Caregiver Burden: A Cross-Sectional Study of Two Independent Samples/Periton Diyalizi Hastalarında Öz-Yeterlilik ve Bakıcı Yüküyle İlişkili Faktörler: İki Bağımsız Örneklem Üzerine Kesitsel Bir Çalışma.

Aim: To investigate the factors associated with self-efficacy in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis and to identify the factors associated with caregiver burden in their caregivers.
Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, patients (n=35) and their caregivers (n=30) were selected from two different tertiary university hospitals between October 2024 and May 2025. Patients completed the General Self-Efficacy Scale (Cronbach's α=0.97), while caregivers completed the Burden Interview Scale. Statistical analyses included correlation tests, simple and multiple linear regression, and bootstrap validation.
Results: Patient self-efficacy was significantly associated with male gender, employment status, and independence in peritoneal dialysis care (all p<0.05). The need for assistance showed the strongest bivariate association, explaining 22.8% of the variance in self-efficacy. In contrast, caregiver burden was not strongly associated with most demographic or patient clinical factors, showing only a non-significant trend toward association with caregiver income level (p=0.061). Multivariate models explained notable portions of variance in both outcomes (28.4% for self-efficacy, 37.8% for burden); however, neither overall model reached statistical significance, so these associations should be regarded as exploratory.
Conclusion: In patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis, self-efficacy was found to be associated with modifiable factors such as employment status and care independence, whereas caregiver burden appeared to be multidimensional and less dependent on demographic variables. These findings highlight specific at-risk patient and caregiver profiles and underscore the critical role for nurses in implementing integrated, holistic assessments and interventions to enhance patient self-management and alleviate caregiver burden, thereby improving outcomes and treatment sustainability in peritoneal dialysis.
