Aim: Non-compliance with immunosuppressive drugs after transplantation is a common problem. Ensuring drug compliance in kidney transplant patients is of critical importance both in terms of preserving the quality of life of patients and keeping the transplanted organ functional in the long term.
Objective: The aim of this bibliometric study is to reveal the trends, scientific productivity, and collaboration patterns in the literature on medication adherence among kidney transplant patients.
Materials and Methods: Bibliometric analysis and literature mapping method were used in the study. In this study, a total of 772 publications were accessed from the Elsevier SCOPUS database as a result of a search conducted on August 15, 2024. A total of 633 publications on nursing and medicine were analyzed. In the study, MS Excel program was used to give percentage and frequency distributions of the data and to present table visualizations, and VOSviewer was used for visual network analysis.
Results: It was determined that the most publications on medication adherence in kidney transplant patients were made in 2021 (n=60, 9.47%), the journal with the most publications on the subject was “Transplantation”, and the most cited journal was “American Journal of Managed Careen”. The most frequently used keywords by the authors were “kidney transplantation”, “medication adherence” and “renal transplantation”. The United States of America was found to be the country with the highest number of publications on the subject.
Conclusion: Studies on medication adherence in kidney transplant patients have been increasing in recent years. This rise is thought to hold significant importance in maintaining organ health over the long term and improving the quality of life for kidney transplant patients. Bridging the knowledge gaps in this area is achievable through the integration of multidisciplinary approaches and technological innovations. Therefore, it is recommended that future research focus on the effects of individual differences, the impact of educational and counseling programs, and the role of technological support in enhancing adherence.
