Vehhâbîliğe Yönelik Akademik Söylemler Üzerine Bibliyometrik ve Tematik Bir Çözümleme

Öz

Vehhâbîlik, XVIII. yüzyılın ortalarında Necd bölgesinde Muhammed b. Abdülvehhâb’ın (ö. 1206/1792) öncülüğünde ortaya çıkan dinî bir harekettir. Bu hareket, ortaya çıktığı dönemde İslâm’ın hicrî ilk üç asrındaki anlayış, uygulama ve kaynak bütünlüğünü referans alarak dinin özgün saflığını yeniden yorumlamayı, bireysel ve toplumsal düzlemde bu saflığı ihya etmeyi hedeflemiştir. Muhammed b. Abdülvehhâb’ın tevhid merkezli yaklaşımı, bid‘at karşıtlığı, mezar ziyaretlerine, evliya kültüne ve tasavvufî uygulamalara yönelik eleştirileri hem inanç ıslahı rolü hem de toplumsal, kültürel ve siyasal düzeyde dönüştürücü bir misyon üstlenmiştir. Zamanla Suûdî Arabistan’ın kurucu ideolojisine dönüşen Vehhâbîlik, günümüzde başta Arap Yarımadası olmak üzere, Afrika’dan Güneydoğu Asya’ya, Kafkasya’dan Avrupa’ya kadar uzanan geniş bir coğrafyada etki uyandırmaya devam etmektedir. Bu yayılma süreci ise akademik literatürde farklı teorik yaklaşımlarla ve çeşitli perspektiflerle incelenmektedir. Literatürde yer alan çalışmaların büyük çoğunluğu tarihsel, teolojik ve siyasal yönleri ele alırken, bu söylemlerin küresel akademik temsil biçimlerine ilişkin kapsamlı bir analiz oldukça sınırlıdır. Bu çalışma ise Vehhâbîliğin akademik düzlemde hangi teorik çerçevelerle ele alındığı, hangi temalar üzerinden inşa edildiği ve bu temsillerin nasıl bir söylemsel yapı içerdiği sorunsalına dayanmaktadır. Çalışmada Vehhâbîlik üzerine yapılmış akademik yayınlar konu edilmekte, bu bağlamda 1992–2025 Haziran dönemi arasında Scopus veri tabanında yayınlanan çok disiplinli çalışmalar incelenmektedir. Dolayısıyla çalışma Vehhâbîliğin uluslararası akademik söylemde nasıl temsil edildiğini bibliyometrik ve tematik olarak ortaya koymayı amaçlamakta, hareketin küresel etkileri, algısal boyutları ve ilişkili diğer meseleleri üzerine yapılacak yeni araştırmalara katkıda bulunmayı hedeflemektedir. Araştırmada iki aşamalı bir yöntem izlenmiştir. İlk olarak Vehhâbîlik konulu akademik literatür bibliyometrik analiz yöntemiyle değerlendirilmiş ve nicel veriler ortaya konulmuştur. Ardından nicel veriler doğrultusunda öne çıkan akademik metinlerin tematik içerik analizi yapılmıştır. Toplam 263 çalışma; yayınlandığı coğrafya, yazar profilleri, atıf oranları, teorik yaklaşımları, analiz düzeyleri ve akademik etkileri açısından sınıflandırılmıştır. Analiz sürecinde VOSviewer (ağ haritalama) ve MAXQDA (nitel kodlama) yazılımlarından yararlanılmış, belirlenen ana temalar ve alt kodlar doğrultusunda kapsamlı bir veri seti oluşturulmuştur. Elde edilen bulgulara göre Vehhâbîlik konulu yayınların büyük çoğunluğu sosyal bilimler disiplinine aittir. Din sosyolojisi, siyaset bilimi, uluslararası ilişkiler ve İslâm araştırmaları gibi alanlarda yoğunlaşan bu yayınlar 2010 yılı sonrasında istikrarlı bir artış göstermektedir. Ülke bazında değerlendirildiğinde ise ABD, İngiltere ve Rusya Federasyonu hem üretim hem de atıf gücü açısından ön plana çıkmakta, buna karşın İslâm dünyasına ait ülkelerin katkılarının oldukça sınırlı kaldığı gözlemlenmektedir. Endonezya, Türkiye ve İran gibi ülkelerden düzenli yayınlar yapılmasına rağmen bu yayınların uluslararası etki gücünün sınırlı olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Tematik analiz sürecinde Vehhâbîlik literatüründe öne çıkan altı ana tema belirlenmektedir: (1) Radikalizm ve Siyasal İslâm ile ilişki, (2) Küresel Yayılım ve Etki, (3) Tarihsel ve Teolojik Arka Plan, (4) Devlet Desteği ve Araçsallaşma, (5) Karşıt Söylemler ve Eleştiriler, (6) Modernleşme, Kimlik ve Toplumsal Dönüşüm. Bu temalar üzerinden yapılan kodlamalarda “terörizm”, “selefîlik”, “cihat”, “el-Kaide”, “Suûdî Arabistan”, “modernleşme”, “İbn Teymiyye” gibi anahtar kavramların yayılım gösterdiği görülmektedir. Özellikle 11 Eylül 2001 saldırılarının ve 2010 sonrası Arap Baharı sürecinin Vehhâbîlik söyleminde önemli kırılma noktaları olduğu, bu dönemlerde ve sonrasında radikalizm ile olan ilişkinin daha sık tartışılır hâle geldiği tespit edilmektedir. Ayrıca literatürdeki yayınların önemli bir kısmının bireysel olarak kaleme alındığı, disiplinler arası iş birliklerinin ve kurumsal desteklerin sınırlı olduğu gözlemlenmektedir. Destekleyici kurumlar arasında ABD, Avrupa, Rusya ve İsrail merkezli araştırma fonlarının öne çıkması, literatürün söylemsel yönelimi hakkında da dikkat çekici ipuçları vermektedir. Bu çalışma, Scopus indeksli yayınlarda Vehhâbîliğin akademik söylemdeki temsillerini, öne çıkan tematik odakları ve ideolojik çerçeveleri sistematik biçimde ortaya koymaktadır.

A Bibliometric and Thematic Analysis of Academic Discourses on Wahhābism

Öz

Wahhābism is a religious movement that emerged in the middle of the eighteenth century in the Najd region under the leadership of Muhammad b. ‘Abd al-Wahhāb (d. 1206/1792). This movement aimed to reinterpret the original purity of the religion and to revive this purity at the individual and social level by referring to the integrity of understanding, practice, and sources in the first three centuries of Islam. Muhammad b. ‘Abd al-Wahhāb’s tawhid-centred approach, his opposition to bid’ah, and his criticism of grave-visiting, the cult of the saints, and Sufi practices have assumed both a reformative role in faith and a transformative mission at the social, cultural, and political levels. Over time, Wahhābism became the founding ideology of Saudi Arabia, and today it continues to have an impact on a wide geography ranging from the Arabian Peninsula to Africa, Southeast Asia, the Caucasus, and Europe. This expansion process has been analysed in the academic literature with different theoretical approaches and perspectives. While most of the studies in the literature deal with historical, theological, and political aspects, a comprehensive analysis of the global academic representation of these discourses is quite limited. This study, however, is based on the problematic of the theoretical frameworks through which Wahhābism is addressed in the academic arena, the themes through which it is constructed, and the discursive structure of its representations. This study focuses on academic publications on Wahhābism, and in this context, multidisciplinary studies published in the Scopus database between 1992 and June 2025 are analyzed. Therefore, the study aims to reveal bibliometrically and thematically how Wahhābism is represented in international academic discourse, and to contribute to future research on the global impact of the movement, its perceptual dimensions, and other related issues. A two-stage method was employed for the research. First, the academic literature on Wahhābism was evaluated through bibliometric analysis, and quantitative data were presented. Then, a thematic content analysis of the prominent academic texts was conducted in line with the quantitative data. A total of 263 studies were classified in terms of geography of publication, author profiles, citation rates, theoretical approaches, levels of analysis, and academic impact. VOSviewer (network mapping) and MAXQDA (qualitative coding) software were used in the analysis process, and a comprehensive data set was created in line with the main themes and sub-codes identified. According to the findings, the majority of the publications on Wahhābism belong to the social sciences discipline. These publications, which are concentrated in fields such as sociology of religion, political science, international relations, and Islamic studies, show a steady increase after 2010. On a country level, the USA, the UK, and the Russian Federation stand out in terms of both production and citation power, whereas the contributions of countries belonging to the Islamic world remain quite limited. Although there are regular publications from countries such as Indonesia, Türkiye, and Iran, it is understood that the international impact of these publications is limited. In the process of thematic analysis, six main themes that stand out in the literature on Wahhābism are identified: (1) Relationship with Radicalism and Political Islam, (2) Global Spread and Influence, (3) Historical and Theological Background, (4) State Support and Instrumentalization, (5) Counter-Discourses and Criticisms, (6) Modernization, Identity and Social Transformation. It is seen that key concepts such as “terrorism”, “Salafism”, “jihad”, “al-Qaeda”, “Saudi Arabia”, “modernization”, and “Ibn Taymiyya” are prevalent in the coding made through these themes. It has been observed that the 9/11 attacks and the post-2010 Arab Spring process have constituted significant turning points in the Wahhābi discourse, and that the relationship with radicalism has increasingly become a subject of discussion during and after these periods. Additionally, it is observed that a substantial portion of the literature publications are written individually, and interdisciplinary collaborations and institutional support are limited. The prominence of US, European, Russian, and Israeli research funds among the supporting institutions also provides remarkable clues about the discursive orientation of the literature. This study systematically reveals the representations of Wahhābism in academic discourse, as well as the prominent thematic foci and ideological frameworks, in Scopus-indexed publications.
