Sociodemographic and Etiological Assessment of Burn Patients in the Western Black Sea Region: Data from a Newly Established Burn Unit
Öz
T
his study aimed to determine the sociodemographic and etiological characteristics of burn patients in the Western Black Sea Region.
T
he study sample consisted of 216 individuals who received treatment at the Zonguldak Atatürk State Hospital Burn Unit between Janu
ary 17, 2023, and February 1, 2025. Data were collected retrospectively by reviewing patient records using a Sociodemographic Informa
tion Form, a Patient Burn Injuries Information Form, and the Lund-Browder Chart. Data were evaluated using descriptive statistics; the
Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for comparative analyses.
T
he mean age of the individuals was 46.43 ± 18.50 years, with 32.4% aged 25-44 and 31.9% aged 45-64. Of the individuals, 56% were male,
60.6% were married, and 42.1% were primary school graduates. Analysis of burn etiologies revealed that 58.3% were scalds, 30.1% were
f
lame burns, 5.1% were contact burns with hot objects, 5.1% were chemical burns, 0.9% were arc/flash burns, and 0.5% were electrical
burns. In terms of burn depth, 62.5% had second-degree burns, 21.3% had combined second- and third-degree burns, 13.4% had third-de gree burns, and 2.8% had first-degree burns. The mean total body surface area was 6.10 ± 6.40. The number of dressings (20.94±13.18)
and length of stay (21.68 ±14.16 days) for individuals aged 64-75 were significantly higher than the number of dressings (12.56 ± 10.96)
and length of stay (12.85 ± 11.13 days) for individuals aged 25-44 (p<0.05). The number of dressing changes for males (16.34 ± 11.67)
was significantly higher than for females (12.80 ± 11.25, p < 0.05). Individuals with a chronic disease had a significantly higher number
of dressing changes (18.55 ± 11.81) and a longer hospital stay (22.56 ± 19.24 days) compared to individuals without a chronic disease
(13.45 ± 11.30 dressing changes and 13.99 ± 11.64 days, p < 0.05).
It was determined that the burn patient profile in the Western Black Sea Region shares similarities with the literature but also exhibits
region-specific characteristics, such as a higher mean age. Since burns are largely preventable injuries, it is recommended to prioritize
community-based education and awareness campaigns.
