The Importance and Methods of Professional Ethics Education in Universities

Öz

This study examines the significance and functions of ethics education in universities, with a focus on professional ethics education.
Universities have existed for nearly a thousand years and are at the heart of society as centers of research and learning, where the present and
the future are created. In this context, one of the most important functions of universities is the training of professionals in various fields. In
addition to gaining knowledge and skills relevant to their profession, it is essential for university students to develop ethical attitudes and
values. This study provides examples from fields such as medicine, law, public policy, education and engineering to demonstrate effective
methods for making ethics courses more student-centered and aligned with active learning principles and to develop ethical reasoning and
decision-making skills. University education contributes to students’ academic, social, psychological, intellectual, cultural, and character
development, and prepares them to be mature and responsible adults. All professionals working in the public and private sectors have an obligation to adhere to ethical principles and standards, and universities must train students to navigate ethical challenges they may
encounter in their future careers. Therefore, universities must train their students to be able to cope with ethical dilemmas in their future
professional lives in which they join shortly after. Ethics education in universities should focus on helping students develop knowledge,
skills, and attitudes related to the values, principles, rules, and standards of their chosen profession, and to be aware of their own and
others’ rights and responsibilities.

Üniversitelerde Meslek Etiği Eğitiminin Önemi ve Yöntemleri

Öz

Bu çalışmada üniversitede etik eğitiminin amaç ve işlevleri ile üniversitede meslek etiği eğitiminin önemi ve yöntemleri ele alınmıştır. Yaklaşık bin yıldır var olan, bugünün ve geleceğin yaratıldığı, araştırma ve öğrenme merkezleri olarak toplumun kalbinde yer alan üniversitelerin en önemli işlevlerinden biri de çeşitli alanlarda profesyonellerin yetiştirilmesidir. Belli bir mesleğe hazırlanan üniversite öğrencilerine, mesleğin bilgi ve becerileri kadar etik tutum ve değerlerin kazandırılması da yükseköğretim sisteminin temel amaçları arasındadır. Bu çalışmada üniversitede verilen etik derslerinin sadece bilgi aktarmaya yönelik olmayıp, daha öğrenci merkezli ve aktif öğrenme ilkelerine uygun, etik muhakeme ve karar verebilme becerisini geliştirecek şekilde yürütülebilmesi için kullanılabilecek yöntem ve tekniklere tıp, yargı, eğitim, kamu ve mühendislik etiği gibi alanlarda kullanılabilecek örnekler sunulmuştur. Üniversiteye gitmek, bireylerin yaşamını değiştiren köklü bir deneyimdir. Üniversite eğitimi öğrencilerin akademik, sosyal, psikolojik, zihinsel, entelektüel, kültürel ve karakter gelişimine pek çok katkı sağlamakta ve onların olgun ve sorumlu yetişkinler olmalarına ortam hazırlamaktadır. Kamusal ve özel sektörde iş gören bütün profesyoneller her türlü eylem ve kararlarında kabul edilen etik ilke ve standartlara uygun hareket etmekle yükümlüdürler. Bu nedenle üniversiteler, öğrencileri çok kısa bir süre sonra katılacakları profesyonel yaşamın etik ikilemleri ile başa çıkabilecek şekilde yetiştirmelidirler. Öğrencilerin akademik dürüstlük ilkelerine uygun, kendilerinin ve başkalarının hak ve sorumluluklarının bilinci içinde, etik ilkelere uygun davranışlar sergileyebilmesi için üniversitelerde mesleğin değer, ilke, kural ve standartlarına ilişkin yeterlikleri kazandıracak sağlam bir etik eğitimi yapılandırılmalıdır.
