AN ARCHETYPICAL JOURNEY IN THE THEATRICAL WORKS OF ŞEMSEDDİN SAMİ
Öz
The concept of archetype, developed by Carl Gustav Jung, one of the founders of modern psychology, refers to the "original sample" or "first images" located in the collective unconscious of humanity, regardless of religion, language or race. One of these archetypes, the “journey,” is a universal phenomenon that represents the internal and external transformation process of the hero in modern literature, as well as in mythological and legendary narratives. In this context, the journey tells the story of a chosen hero's struggle to mature through various tests and going through the stages of "departure", "adulthood" and "return" in his/her adventure to turn the chaos in his/her society into order. In this process, the hero completes his/her transformation by not only overcoming the obstacles in the outside world but also discovering her own self.
In this study, the heroic journeys in Şemseddin Sâmi's plays "Besâ yahut Ahde Vefa", "Seydi Yahya", "Gâve" and "Vicdan" were examined in terms of the stages of departure, initiation and return on the basis of Joseph Campbell's "The Hero's Endless Journey" theory. The analysis concluded that the heroes encountered both external obstacles and internal conflicts and matured spiritually through them.
As a result of the study, it was observed that Şemseddin Sâmi created a modern hero type by taking advantage of the structural features of mythical narratives and tried to create a sense of identification in the reader/audience through the tragedies, tests and internal struggles experienced by the heroes. Thus, the author reinterpreted the hero's mythical journey from a symbolic perspective by treating the individual's struggle to realize his/her own self on a universal and literary level.
