Sacrifice, the Street, and Violence: A Comparative Study of the Stories “The Puppy” by Orhan Kemal and “The Stray Dog” by Sadegh Hedayat
Öz
This study examines Orhan Kemal’s “The Puppy” and Sadegh Hedayat’s “The Stray Dog” through a comparative framework organized around the metaphor of sacrifice and the dialectics of violence. The theoretical basis draws on Giorgio Agamben’s concepts of “space of exception,” “bare life,” and homo sacer, alongside René Girard’s theory of “victimary marks” and “mimetic contagion.” In both stories, the dog is expelled from legal and moral protection and reduced to a sacrificial victim; yet the two authors arrive at this point by different routes. Orhan Kemal renders the horizontal violence among the dispossessed and the tensions of class hierarchy through a social-realist lens, while Hedayat conveys the modern individual’s ontological drift and social isolation through the character of Pat. The study argues that, despite their different cultural traditions, both authors adopt the vulnerable body of a voiceless creature as a shared site of imagination. In these spaces where law is suspended, violence becomes the channel through which the oppressed briefly sense power; animal life is its first casualty. Both texts ultimately question the limits of social morality through the wordless suffering of a sacrificial figure.

Kurban, Sokak ve Şiddet: Orhan Kemal’in “Köpek Yavrusu” ile Sâdık Hidâyet’in “Aylak Köpek” Hikâyeleri Üzerine Karşılaştırmalı Bir İnceleme
