The Historical and Cultural Motivations Behind Qasida Composition in the Classical Period of the Ottoman Empire

Öz

The 15th and 16th centuries are widely regarded as the classical period of the Ottoman Empire, and as such, represent a peak period in literature, as well as achievements in many other traditional arts. Within the corpus of Ottoman classical literature, the composition of qasidas holds a distinctive place. Despite the growing influence of the well-established literary traditions of Arabic and Persian on Turkish poetry, and with many Ottoman poets participating in the same literary culture, the Turkish language has gained a distinctive place of its own through nearly a thousand years of cultural and linguistic heritage. This achievement is even more remarkable considering that Turkish gradually developed into an imperial language. Beyond the formative role of literary tradition in shaping the composition of qasidas, the patronage system functioned as a crucial socio-cultural mechanism that motivated poets to compose and present qasidas to their patrons. Ottoman literary and poetical composition during this period produced a remarkable number of qasidas, particularly through experimentation with new stylistic forms, and even with the incorporation of political, military, and social themes that indicated that the genre was very much responsive to the concerns of society. This article argues that there were several motivations for the classical Ottoman poet who composed qasidas from the late medieval period to the early modern era with some examples provided as support for the arguments.
