High Politics-Oulama (Religious Functionary) Relations in Ottoman Bureaucracy In Ottoman society, religious formative substantially was based on the political initiativies and requirements. The lack of priesthood in Islam (Especially in Sünnite Islam) confirmed this fact. On the other hand, competition and jealousy among Sünnite oulama was the thinest ring and breaking point of religious-state relations. Thus, authentic and independent religious and entelectual thinking couldn’t came into existence beyond state politics. This problem also has reflected to following periods after Ottoman state. Mulla Lutfi was one of the blazing and tragic examples in Ottoman-Turkish political culture. In this study, religion-state relations and position of ulama in Ottoman society will be analysed in the case of Mulla Lutfi
