Prevalence of Lumbosacral Transitional Vertebrae in Asymptomatic Young Men

Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LSTV)in asymptomatic men who presented to our hospital for a medical report, using posteroanterior chest radiographs and plain radiographs of the urinary system, and to compare the results with the current literature. Materials and methods: Between January 2022 and March 2024, the posteroanterior chest (CXR)and plain radiographs of the urinary system (KUB)of 1593 men who presented for a medical report were retrospectively examined. All costae were assessed on the chest radiographs, and all lumbar vertebrae, the 12th rib, and the lumbosacral junction were evaluated on the urinary system radiographs. A total of 1490 cases were included in the study. The identified lumbosacral transitional vertebrae were classified according to Castellvi's classification, and their prevalence was determined. Results: The age range of the 1490 cases included in the study was 18-45 years, with an average age of 27.7 ± 5 years.The prevalence of lumbosacral transitional vertebra was found to be 23.1%, with the prevalence of lumbarization at 4.8% and sacralization at 18.3%.In 344 cases (23.1%), lumbosacral transitional vertebra was observed, of which sacralization was detected in 272 cases (18.3%) and lumbarization in 72 cases (4.8%). Conclusion: Our study observed that lumbosacral transitional vertebra is a relatively common variant.

Asemptomatik Genç Erkeklerde Lumbosakral Transizyonel Vertebra Prevalansı

Öz

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, tıbbi rapor için hastanemize başvuran asemptomatik erkeklerde lumbosakral transizyonel vertebra (LSTV) prevalansını posteroanterior akciğer grafisi ve direk üriner sistem grafileri kullanarak belirlemek ve sonuçları mevcut literatürle karşılaştırmaktır. Gereç ve yöntemler: Ocak 2022 ile Mart 2024 tarihleri arasında, tıbbi rapor için başvuran 1593 erkeğin posteroanterior akciğer grafisi ve direk üriner sistem grafileri retrospektif olarak incelenmiştir. Akciğer grafilerinde tüm kostalar, direkt üriner sistem grafilerinde ise tüm lomber vertebralar, 12. kaburga ve lumbosakral bileşke değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmaya toplam 1490 vaka dahil edildi. Tanımlanan lumbosakral transizyonel vertebralar Castellvi sınıflandırmasına göre sınıflandırıldı ve prevalansları belirlendi. Bulgular: Çalışmaya dahil edilen 1490 vakanın yaş aralığı 18-45 idi ve ortalama yaş 27,7 ± 5 idi. Lumbosakral transizyonel vertebra prevalansı %23,1, lomberizasyon prevalansı %4,8 ve sakralizasyon prevalansı %18,3 olarak bulundu. 344 vakada (%23,1) lumbosakral transizyonel vertebra gözlendi; bunların 272'sinde (%18,3) sakralizasyon, 72'sinde (%4,8) lomberizasyon saptandı. Sonuç: Çalışmamızda, lumbosakral transizyonel vertebra nispeten yaygın bir varyant olduğu gözlendi.
