Evaluation of the Relationship Between ABO and Rh Blood Groups and Common Chronic Diseases

Öz

Objective: In our study, we aimed to examine the possible relationships between the ABO and Rh blood groups and hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia, which are common chronic diseases. Material and Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, patients diagnosed with hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia were examined. The participants' demographic characteristics and ABO and Rh blood types were retrospectively reviewed. The obtained data were analyzed according to age, gender, and blood type. Categorical variables were expressed as numbers and percentages, and differences between groups were evaluated using the χ² test. The statistical significance level was accepted as p<0.05. Results: In this study, data from 410 patients were evaluated to examine the distribution of three chronic diseases according to blood groups. The prevalence of hypertension was found to be higher in individuals with blood group O compared to those with blood groups A, B, and AB (p=0.040). That blood type was associated with a significantly increased odds of hypertension compared to other ABO blood types (OR, 1.90; 95% CI, 1.22–2.97; p=0.005). When ABO and Rh groups were evaluated together, hypertension was most commonly observed in the O Rh− and A Rh− sub-groups (p=0.001). No significant difference was found between blood groups regarding the frequency of type 2 diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia (p>0.05). Conclusion: Our results showed that some blood groups (O Rh– and A Rh– ) may be associated with hypertension. These results suggest that blood group information can be used as an auxiliary variable parameter in hypertension risk assessments.
