Government on Phrasal Structures
Abstract
It is called phrasal structure that shows certain movement, situation or attitude by combining more than one word. Phrasal structures do not only contain words. At the same time sentences are also syntactic unity by combining the words or phrase structures.
According to Chomsky’s Government and Binding Theory all of the phrasal structures have one head complement at least and other items which connected to head. Other items may be mandatory or optional, depending on the semantic and syntactic properties of the phrasal structure or sentence.
In the Turkic word-phrases, the existence of the definite determinants that characterize, restrict, and control the executive categorical are manifested in the same way. These elements fulfill the duties assigned to them by the executive element within the group and thus play a mandatory or optional role. In sentences, the head complement that is the manager of the phrasal structure is predicate. The predicate determines the mandatory or optional elements.
In this study, it is attempted to evaluate the Turkish phrases by considering the principles of Chomsky’s Government and Binding Theory. Phrasal structures and sentences are examined separately in their own hierarchy of government, so the diagrams are obtained.
