Soft Tissue Infection Following the Cat Bite: A Case Report

Animal bites and animal bite infections continue to be among the frequently encountered health problems in the world. The most common complication due to animal bites is polymicrobial soft tissue infection. The infection possibility following the cat bites is higher than that of dog bites. The risk factors of an infection after a cat bite include diabetes, immunosuppression, old age, late going to hospital, or inadequate prophylactic treatment. It is recommended to give appropriate antibiotic prophylaxis to the risky patients. In this case, a soft tissue infection developed after a cat bite in an 80-year-old female patient who did not use prophylactic antibiotics. The patient responded to the parenteral antibiotic therapy clinically and laboratoryly and any serious infectious complications were not developed in the patient. This case is presented to draw attention that comprehensive and careful evaluation of all bites and use of antibiotic prophylaxis in risky patients are important even if tissue damage is minimal.

Kedi Isırığı Sonrası Gelişen Yumuşak Doku Enfeksiyonu: Bir Olgu Sunumu

Öz

Hayvan ısırıkları ve hayvan ısırıklarına bağlı gelişen enfeksiyonlar dünyada sık karşılaşılan sağlık sorunları içerisinde yer almaya devam etmektedir. Hayvan ısırıklarından dolayı en sık görülen komplikasyon polimikrobiyal yumuşak doku enfeksiyonudur. Kedi ısırıkları sonrasında enfeksiyon gelişme olasılığı köpeklere göre daha fazla olmaktadır. Kedi ısırığı sonrası enfeksiyon için risk faktörleri arasında diyabet, immünsüpresyon, ileri yaş, geç başvuru veya yetersiz profilaktik tedavi yer almaktadır. Riskli hastalarda uygun antibiyotik profilaksisi verilmesi önerilmektedir. Bu olguda, profilaktik antibiyotik kullanmayan 80 yaşında kadın hastada kedi ısırması sonrası yumuşak doku enfeksiyonu gelişmiştir. Hasta parenteral antibiyoterapiye klinik ve laboratuvar olarak yanıt vermiş, hastada ciddi bir enfeksiyöz komplikasyon gelişmemiştir. Bu olgu doku hasarı minimal bile olsa tüm ısırıkların kapsamlı ve dikkatli değerlendirilmesinin ve riskli hastalarda antibiyotik profilaksisi kullanımının önemli olduğuna dikkat çekmek amacı ile sunulmuştur.
