One of the main questions in social sciences is the origin and formation of language. Although the history of the
inquiries about the origin of language dates back to ancient times, it was first and systematically examined in Ancient
Greece. One of the architects of today's philosophical thinking Plato’s endeavour to discover the formation and the
logic of the signs/names through his own dialogues in Cratylos and partly in Sophist elucidated the language debates
to some extent. The attempt to discover the secrets of language has continued from the time of Plato until the Age of
Enlightenment. The thinkers of the Enlightenment vigorously worked on this issue and some of them contributed to
the subject with major works. Thinkers such as Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, Leibniz, Rousseau studied the origins and
functions of language. Thus, concepts such as language and signs have become one of the basic subjects of
philosophical writings. In the field of language philosophy, two approaches have increasingly emerged as general and
even obligatory: Naturalism and conventionalism. This study aims to reveal the language theories of historically
renowned philosophers and thus to redraw attention to the importance of language. The goal of the study is to draw
attention to the importance of articulated language by considering the fact that all meanings generated in daily life, and tried to discover in the field of science are produced by articulated language and its signs. And also the study aims to
raise awareness on the medium of language which is one of the basic establishing mechanisms of communication
systems and even society by revealing philosophical debates. In the study we initially examine Plato's linguistic views
in his dialogues Cratylos and Sophist at full length, and later try to form a general philosophical perspective on
articulated language by reflecting on certain Enlightenment philosophers such as Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, Leibniz
and Rousseau.
