SELLING ADVICE: THE COMMERCIALIZATION OF CONDUCT LITERATURE IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY ENGLAND

Öz

This article examines the commercialization of conduct literature in seventeenth-century England through the pamphlet controversy surrounding Francis Osborne’s Advice to a Son (1656). It argues that the English print market transformed moral instruction into a commercially driven arena in which intellectual debates became a catalyst for profit, controversy, and more publication. Focusing on Osborne’s Advice to a Son and its cynical ideas of marriage and women, the study traces how its popularity generated a sequence of imitative and oppositional pamphlets. These responses, particularly John Heydon’s Advice to a Daughter (1658) and Thomas Pecke’s rebuttal, reveal strategies of parasitic authorship, plagiarism, and retaliatory marketing within the pamphlet trade. Rather than resolving ideological disputes, these texts exploited controversy as a market mechanism that sustained readership and ensured continuous reprinting. By situating the Osborne–Heydon–Pecke conflict within the economics of the early modern print industry, the article shows how pamphlets functioned as speculative commodities. It further demonstrates how conduct literature was reshaped into sensational, entertainment-driven discourse. Ultimately, the study argues that authorial identities were commodified alongside texts, and that literary value in this market was determined by controversy, imitation, and sales potential in early modern England.
