THEORY OF THE NOVEL IN CONTEXT OF SOCIOLOGY OF LITERATURE: FOUR ANALYTIC MODELS
Öz
The study addresses the problematic of the rise of the novel within the framework of the sociology of literature, noting that the field lacks a unified structure due to conflicting historical explanations regarding the genre's emergence. While various theories establish causal relationships between the novel and phenomena such as capitalism, the rise of the bourgeoisie, and individualism, these frameworks often remain fragmented. The primary aim of this study is to categorize these diverse theoretical perspectives into distinct analytical frameworks to provide a facilitating roadmap for the history-based sociological study of literature. Utilizing a methodology of ideal-typical construction, taxonomic classification and comparison derived from a comprehensive literature review, the study identifies and critically analyzes four primary explanatory models of the theory of novel: 1) Phenomenological, 2) Empirical, 3) Postcolonial, and 4) Feminist. These models range from Lukács’ focus on alienated consciousness to Watt’s formal realism, and from Said’s imperial discourse to feminist critiques of patriarchal authority. Ultimately, the study suggests that future sociological research should move beyond traditional clichés, such as the rise of the middle class, to explore less-traversed areas like colonialism and the popularization of empirical knowledge through overlooked texts such as travel narratives.
