Association Between Post-Dural Puncture Headache and Body Mass Index in Patients Undergoing Cesarean Section
Öz
Background: This study aimed to analyze the impact of body mass index (BMI) on the development of post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) following cesarean section performed under spinal anesthesia.
Materials and Methods: A total of 160 parturients between the 38th and 42nd gestational weeks who underwent cesarean delivery were included in this prospective observational study. Individuals with a BMI below 30 kg/m² were categorized as the first group, while those with a BMI of 30 kg/m² or higher were classified as the second group. All participants were evaluated for PDPH on the fifth postoperative day. The presence, severity, and onset time of PDPH, along with accompanying symptoms including tinnitus, vomiting, nausea, photophobia, and dizziness, were analyzed. Results: Age, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) scores and operation times were similar in both groups (p>0.05). PDPH was observed in 45 patients (28.12%), with 38 of these cases (84.4%) occurring in Group 1 (p<0.001). However, the onset time, severity, and presence of accompanying symptoms were similar between the two groups (p>0.05).
Conclusions: Our findings indicate that PDPH occurred significantly more frequently among individuals whose BMI was below 30 kg/m² than in those with a BMI of 30 kg/m² or higher following spinal anesthesia for cesarean delivery.
