The Relationship Between Parents' Knowledge, Attitudes, and Behaviors Regarding Heel Prick Testing and Their Health Literacy Status

Öz

Background: The relationship between the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of families in Şanlıurfa regarding the heel prick test and their health literacy levels is being investigated.
Materials and Methods: The descriptive study was conducted with 116 parents who refused heel prick screening in Şanlıurfa province. In the analysis; descriptive statistics, univariate analyses (Mann Whitney-U, Kruskal-Wallis tests), Spearman Correlation test were used.
Results: 36.2% of parents scored below the median on the knowledge assessment test, and 48.3% scored below the median on the behavior assessment test. 94.8% of families have inadequate health literacy levels. A positive, weak, and statistically significant relationship was found between the heel prick test information score and the attitude and behavior score (r=0.453, p<0.001).

Conclusions: Parents' level of knowledge is related to the development of attitudes and behaviors. However, health literacy is not a determinant of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding heel prick blood.
