Challenges Faced by Siblings of Children with Autism

This study aims to understand the emotional, social, and psychological experiences of siblings of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The research was conducted through semi-structured in-depth interviews with 10 siblings, all aged 18, of children diagnosed with moderate ASD. The participants' responses were analyzed using content analysis, and the data were categorized thematically. Findings indicate that siblings of children with ASD face various challenges, including emotional isolation, anxiety about the future, social difficulties, excessive responsibility, and feelings of guilt. In particular, the family's focus on the care of the child with autism often leads to neglect of the emotional needs of the siblings, causing them to feel overlooked or isolated. However, some participants also reported that having a sibling with autism helped them develop empathy, a sense of responsibility, patience, and tolerance. This study highlights the need to enhance family awareness, establish sibling support groups, provide psychological support mechanisms, and expand autism awareness programs in society to support the well-being of siblings of children with ASD. Recognizing that not only the individual with autism but also the entire family is affected by this process, it is crucial to develop policies that ensure a balanced approach within the family structure.

Otizm Spektrum Bozukluğu Tanısı Bulunan Çocukların Kardeşlerinin Karşılaştığı Zorluklar

Öz

Araştırma, otizmli bireylerin kardeşlerinin yaşadığı duygusal, sosyal ve psikolojik deneyimleri anlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada, orta düzeyde otizm tanısı almış 10 çocuğun 18 yaşındaki kardeşleriyle yarı yapılandırılmış derinlemesine görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Katılımcıların ifadeleri içerik analizi yöntemiyle incelenmiş ve veriler tematik olarak kategorize edilmiştir. Bulgular, otizmli bireylerin kardeşlerinin duygusal izolasyon, gelecek kaygısı, sosyal zorluklar, aşırı sorumluluk hissi ve suçluluk duygusu gibi çeşitli zorluklarla karşı karşıya olduğunu göstermektedir. Özellikle aile içinde otizmli bireyin bakımına yoğunlaşılması, diğer kardeşlerin duygusal ihtiyaçlarının göz ardı edilmesine ve zaman zaman yalnızlık hissetmelerine neden olabilmektedir. Bununla birlikte, bazı katılımcılar otizmli bir kardeşe sahip olmanın kendilerine empati, sorumluluk bilinci, sabır ve hoşgörü kazandırdığını ifade etmiştir. Araştırma, otizmli bireylerin kardeşlerinin psikososyal iyi oluşlarını desteklemek için aile içi farkındalığın artırılması, kardeş destek gruplarının oluşturulması, psikolojik destek mekanizmalarının sağlanması ve toplumda otizm farkındalık programlarının yaygınlaştırılması gerektiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Otizmli bireyin sadece kendisi değil, tüm ailesinin bu süreçten etkilendiği göz önünde bulundurularak, aile içi dengeyi sağlayacak politikalar geliştirilmesi önerilmektedir.
