Being a Psychology Student in Türkiye: A Phenomenological Investigation

Öz

Psychology has become quite popular in Türkiye in recent years. The high demand for psychology education has significantly increased the number and capacity of undergraduate programs, while this has brought along several challenges in both training and practice. To assess the current state of psychology training in Türkiye, the opinions of undergraduate psychology students are crucial. Therefore, it was aimed to comprehensively examine their feelings, thoughts, and experiences regarding their program and field. In this phenomenological study, we conducted semi-structured online interviews with 23 students. We derived 5 main themes and 18 sub-themes that reflect the participants' experiences: Perception of Psychology in Society, Professional Identity, Undergraduate Experience, Prominent Issues in the Field, and Future Outlook. The “Perception of Psychology in Society” theme addresses the field's recognition in society, its visibility in the media, and the accessibility of psychological services. The “Professional Identity” theme includes the career choice process and reactions from others, changes in students caused by psychology training, feelings of professional inadequacy, and the influence of professionals on students. The “Undergraduate Experience” theme covers the comprehensiveness of courses, professional social interaction, program satisfaction, and educational limitations. The “Prominent Issues in the Field” theme addresses inadequate legal oversight, attitudes damaging the profession's image, competition in the field, and feelings of injustice. The “Future Outlook” theme encompasses post-graduation anxiety and hope. Ultimately, the importance of efforts concerning professional law, healthy visibility, accreditation, minimum scores, quotas, and legal oversight has been emphasized.

TÜRKİYE’DE PSİKOLOJİ ÖĞRENCİSİ OLMAK: FENOMENOLOJİK BİR İNCELEME

Öz

Psikoloji, son yıllarda Türkiye’de oldukça popüler bir alan haline gelmiştir. Özellikle psikoloji eğitimine yönelik yoğun talep sonucu psikoloji lisans programlarının sayılarında ve kontenjanlarında ciddi artışlar yaşanmıştır ve bu da eğitim ve uygulamada pek çok sorunu beraberinde getirmiştir. Türkiye’de psikoloji eğitiminin güncel durumunu saptayabilmek için konunun önemli bileşenlerinden olan psikoloji lisans öğrencilerinin görüşleri oldukça önemlidir. Bu nedenle bu çalışmada, psikoloji öğrencilerinin bölüm ve alan hakkındaki duygu, düşünce ve deneyimlerinin detaylarıyla incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Fenomenolojik yöntem kullanılan çalışmada, farklı üniversitelerdeki 23 psikoloji öğrencisiyle yarı-yapılandırılmış çevrimiçi görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Görüşmeler yazıya aktarılarak analiz edilmiş ve katılımcıların deneyimlerini yansıtan ortak temalar oluşturulmuştur. Toplumdaki Psikoloji Algısı, Mesleki Kimlik, Lisans Deneyimi, Alanda Öne Çıkan Sorunlar ve Geleceğe Bakış olmak üzere 5 ana tema ve 18 alt tema belirlenmiştir. “Toplumdaki Psikoloji Algısı” ana teması alanın toplumdaki tanınırlığını, medyadaki görünürlüğünü ve psikolojik hizmetlerin ulaşılabilirliğini konu edinmektedir. “Mesleki Kimlik” ana teması meslek tercih süreci ve çevresel tepkileri, eğitimin öğrencide yarattığı değişimleri, mesleki yetersizlik hislerini ve profesyonellerin öğrenci üzerindeki etkisini kapsamaktadır. “Lisans Deneyimi” ana teması derslerin kapsayıcılığı, mesleki etkileşim, bölüm memnuniyeti ve eğitimdeki sınırlılıklar konularından oluşmaktadır. “Alanda Öne Çıkan Sorunlar” ana temasında denetimin yetersizliği, mesleğin imajını sarsan tutumlar, alandaki rekabet, adaletsizlik duygusu konularına değinilmiştir. “Geleceğe Bakış” ana teması ise mezuniyet sonrasına dair kaygı ve umudu içermektedir. Sonuç olarak meslek yasası, sağlıklı bir görünürlük, akreditasyon, baraj puanı, kontenjan ve denetim konularındaki çalışmaların önemi vurgulanmıştır.
