THE PLATFORMIZATION OF TELEVISION NARRATIVE: BROADCAST FLOW, ALGORITHMIC CURATION, AND VIEWER EXPERIENCE

Öz

The proliferation of digital platforms has significantly transformed the production, distribution, and viewing practices of television. While traditional television has long been defined through broadcasting flow, channel scheduling, weekly episode structures, and synchronous viewing practices, digital platforms have repositioned television content within the logics of catalogues, interfaces, algorithmic recommendation systems, and on-demand viewing. This study aims to theoretically discuss the transformation of television narrative in the age of digital platforms through the concepts of flow, platformisation, algorithmic curation, binge-watching, and viewer experience. Rather than relying on empirical data collection, the article offers a conceptual assessment based on the literature of television studies, platform studies, and audience/viewer experience. In this study, television narrative is not considered solely in terms of story, plot, or character development; instead, it is examined together with episode structure, seasonality, narrative continuity, viewing rhythm, and content circulation. The main argument of the article is that digital platforms do not eliminate television; rather, they reshape its flow-centred structure through catalogues, interfaces, algorithmic visibility, and on-demand viewing practices. In this regard, television should not be understood as a media form that has come to an end in the platform era, but as a narrative and viewing regime that is being reconfigured under changing technological, economic, and cultural conditions.
