Feminist inquiries in historical geography

This article examines the contributions of feminist geographical studies to historical geography. Historical geography is a sub-discipline of geography that presents knowledge about the past world and retells its story. Thanks to the spatial turn at the end of the 1970s, a critical and theoretically structured historical geography emerged within human geography. However, historical geography has generally underestimated the theoretical and empirical contributions of feminism in understanding the past. This article evaluates the fruitful interaction between feminist geography and historical geography. The article seeks ways to contribute to the historical geography by considering women's ideas, perspectives, and feelings, which have historically been neglected in the discipline. By applying qualitative research techniques, the article presents a feminist perspective to the studies written in Anglo-Saxon historical geography about various themes in the 19th century. Therefore, the article examines the relationship between the spatial dynamics of the 19th century and the genders by carefully analysing some themes such as gender roles, the production of geographical knowledge, and the moral imaginings of the public sphere. Consequently, the article examines how feminist analyses address and problematise spatial and historical contexts.

Tarihi coğrafyada feminist sorgulamalar

Öz

Bu makale, coğrafyadaki feminist çalışmaların tarihi coğrafyaya katkılarını ele almaktır. Tarihi coğrafya; geçmiş dünyaya dair bazı bilgileri sunan ve hikayesini anlatan coğrafyanın alt disiplinidir. 1970’lerin sonunda mekansal dönüş ile beşerî coğrafya içinde eleştirel ve teorik olarak yapılandırılmış bir tarihi coğrafya ortaya çıkmıştır. Fakat, tarihi coğrafya, geçmişi anlamada feminizmin teorik ve ampirik katkılarını genel anlamıyla göz ardı etmiştir. Bu makale ise feminist coğrafya ile tarihi coğrafya arasındaki faydalı etkileşimi ele almaktadır. Makale, tarihsel olarak coğrafya disiplininde ihmal edilen kadınların fikirleri, bakış açıları ve duygularının tarihi coğrafyaya ne tür katkılar yapabileceğinin yollarını aramaktadır. Makale, nitel araştırma tekniklerine başvurarak Anglo-Sakson tarihi coğrafyasında 19. yüzyılda çeşitli temalar üzerine yazılmış çalışmalara feminist bir bakış açısı sunmaktadır. Bu nedenle makale, toplumsal cinsiyet rolleri, coğrafi bilginin üretimi ve kamusal alanın ahlaki tahayyülleri gibi bazı temaları dikkatli bir şekilde analiz ederek 19. yüzyılın mekansal dinamikleri ile toplumsal cinsiyet arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemektedir. Sonuç olarak makale, feminist analizlerin mekansal ve tarihsel bağlamları nasıl ele alıp sorunsallaştırdığını incelemektedir.
