Doctor-Patient Communication and Patient-Centred Communication in the Delivery of Healthcare Services

Öz

Abstract Communication has been an indispensable necessity for people to express themselves in various ways, from the past to the present. Communication is a necessity that begins at birth and continues until death, encompassing the mutual sharing of emotions, desires and needs, whether verbal or non-verbal. As in every other field, people must communicate in the healthcare sector to express their desires and needs. Individuals in need of healthcare, just as in other service sectors, must communicate with service providers to express their wishes and requests, whilst service providers, in turn, must correctly understand and meet these requests and wishes. Communicating with patients is far more difficult than communicating with healthy individuals. Communication in healthcare is influenced by numerous factors, including cultural differences, the physical environment, the patient’s level of education, the communication skills of both parties, the patient’s psychological state, excessive specialisation and information asymmetry; any breakdown in communication could lead to irreversible consequences. Effective management of a treatment process begins with effective communication. In order for the patient to play an active role in their treatment, they must express themselves, ask any questions they may have, voice their concerns and clearly state their symptoms. The doctor must also convey their information to the patient in a clear and understandable manner. In this way, the communication established with the patient’s input will lead to the right decisions being made. In this context, adopting a patient-centred communication approach will foster better and healthier communication, ensuring both the best possible outcomes from the healthcare services provided and greater patient satisfaction with the healthcare organisation and service providers. This study aims to explore the concepts of healthcare communication, communication in healthcare services and patient-centred communication, whilst highlighting the importance of doctor-patient communication, examining how communication impacts service delivery, and offering recommendations for its improvement.
