Latincede Agnus Dei olarak zikredilen Tanrı’nın kuzusu sembolü, özellikle Yuhanna İncili’nde (1:29) Vaftizci Yahya’nın İsa Mesih’i işaret ederek söylediği “İşte, dünyanın günahını ortadan kaldıran Tanrı kuzusu!” ifadesine dayanmaktadır.

Agnus Dei: The Lamb Symbol in the Christian Idea of Atonement

Yıl 2026, Cilt: 12 Sayı: 1, 129 - 152, 13.01.2026

Öz

This study examines the symbol of Agnus Dei (Lamb of God), one of the fundamental figures of Christian symbolism, in the context of the doctrine of atonement. The doctrine of atonement centers on Christ's sacrifice as the mediating element between human sinfulness and divine grace. In the context of Christian theology, atonement is a central theological concept that combines God's justice and love for humanity, and this is embodied in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. The doctrine of atonement contains many symbols. These include the cross, the blood of Christ, the crown, and the nails. These symbols have acquired intense theological and liturgical meanings through Christ's suffering, death, and resurrection on the cross, representing the cleansing of sin, the satisfaction of divine justice, and salvation. One of the important symbols that emphasizes the idea of salvation is the lamb. The symbol of the Lamb of God, referred to in Latin as Agnus Dei, is based on John the Baptist's statement in the Gospel of John (1:29) when he pointed to Jesus Christ and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” This statement emphasizes that Christ was presented as both a symbolic and functional sacrificial offering and as the ultimate means of removing humanity's debt of sin before divine justice. The study aims to analyze the theological, liturgical, and symbolic dimensions of this symbol in detail (sacrifice, ransom, satisfaction, purification, grace, new covenant, and victory and judgment). The study analyzes passages from the Holy Bible, writings of the Church Fathers, and modern works using literature review and text analysis methods. The study also examines the symbolic meanings of the lamb in relation to the fundamental doctrines of Christian theology. Thus, it is revealed that the Agnus Dei is not only a symbol of the forgiveness of sins, but also a symbol that proclaims God's sovereignty and reorders creation. Furthermore, this symbol has been examined within the framework of contemporary theological approaches (e.g., feminist, environmentalist, postcolonial, ecumenical, and psychoanalytic interpretations) and evaluated in conjunction with its current layers of meaning.
