The Relationship Between Eating Behavior and Conscious Awareness and Anxiety in University Students

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between eating behavior, mindful awareness, and anxiety among university students in detail. Conducted with second and third-year psychology undergraduate students, this research seeks to understand the variability in these areas and determine their correlations. A total of 86 psychology undergraduate students participated in the study, and data were collected through online surveys. The participants' sociodemographic characteristics were evaluated in terms of their effects on eating behaviors, levels of mindfulness, and anxiety. The majority of the participants were female (91.9%) and unmarried (98.9%). Factors such as gender, COVID-19 exposure status, smoking/alcohol use, and body image perception were examined for their relationships with eating behaviors, levels of mindfulness, and anxiety. The results indicated no statistically significant relationship between gender and COVID-19 status with eating behaviors, mindfulness levels, and anxiety. However, it was found that individuals who use smoking/alcohol exhibit significantly higher levels of anxiety. Additionally, the study revealed that body image perception has a significant impact on eating habits. Measurement tools used in the study included the Eating Habits Questionnaire (DEBQ) developed by Van Strein et al. (1986), the Mindful Awareness Scale (BIFÖ) developed by Brown and Ryan (2003), and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) developed by Beck et al. (1988). These scales demonstrated high internal consistency reliability and validity. According to the research findings, while gender and COVID-19 status did not have a statistically significant effect on eating behaviors, levels of mindfulness, and anxiety, smoking/alcohol use was found to have a detrimental effect on anxiety levels. Moreover, participants' body image perception was found to be influential on eating habits. The study also revealed a positive and weak relationship between restrictive eating behavior and emotional eating behavior, as well as a negative and weak relationship between emotional eating behavior and mindful awareness. Furthermore, a negative and moderately significant relationship was identified between anxiety levels and mindful awareness. These findings contribute to understanding the complex relationships between eating behaviors, levels of mindfulness, and anxiety. This study emphasizes the importance of the relationship between eating behaviors and mental health among university students. In this context, increasing psychological support services at universities and raising awareness among students about nutrition and stress management are crucial. Additionally, further research in this area with larger sample sizes is warranted.
