Linking Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder to Future Anxiety Among Injured Palestinians: Case Study from Qalqilya Governorate, Northern West Bank

Öz

This study examines the relationship between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and future anxiety among injured Palestinians in Qalqilya Governorate, an area affected by prolonged political conflict, economic hardship, and limited healthcare access. Injured individuals face compounded psychological challenges due to exposure to violence, loss, displacement, and ongoing uncertainty. A descriptive correlational design was employed with a purposive sample of 312 registered injured persons from the Martyrs and Injured Care Institution. Data were collected using the PTSD Scale (based on DSM-5 criteria) and the Future Anxiety Scale, with statistical analysis including descriptive measures and Pearson correlation coefficients. Findings revealed a moderate level of PTSD symptoms (M = 3.00, SD = 0.16) and high levels of future anxiety (M = 3.83, SD = 0.67). A strong, statistically significant positive correlation was observed between PTSD and future anxiety (r = .759, p < .01), indicating that greater PTSD severity is associated with increased future-oriented anxiety. The study recommends integrated mental health interventions addressing both PTSD and future anxiety, including trauma-informed cognitive behavioral therapy, resilience-building programs, and community-based psychosocial support. Expanding specialized services, training additional mental health professionals, and enhancing social support networks are crucial, alongside addressing structural factors such as mobility restrictions, unemployment, and lack of medical care that perpetuate psychological distress.
