The Russia-Ukraine Conflict in the New Cold War Axis: Revolution, Invasion, and Refugee Movement

Öz

In this study, we examine and search for answers: how conflicts, political turmoil, and economic imbalances around the world have taken shape in the context of the New Cold War and the Russia-Ukraine struggle, despite the end of the Cold War; in Eastern Europe, where the US and the USSR once tried to create a field of operations through proxy wars, are Western countries and Russia continuing their proxy wars today; why does Kiev have historical significance for Russia and Ukraine? To find these answers, it is necessary to briefly touch upon the history of Russia-Ukraine relations, particularly the impact of the promises made by Western countries to Russia in the 1990s. In the context of charismatic authority, Vladimir Putin's leadership role in this war will be discussed, as well as the perspectives of Volodymyr Zelensky and his predecessors on Ukraine's pro-Russian or pro-Western stance and insistence on European Union-NATO membership, and how these factors will influence Ukraine's political moves and future. In addition, the differences between the Ukrainian refugee problem, which began with Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and peaked with the 2022 Russia-Ukraine War, and the Syrian refugee movements of previous periods will be analyzed in terms of the European Union's 'refugee and asylum seeker solution methods'.
