THE EFFECT OF RENEWABLE ENERGY ON ENERGY SECURITY RISKS: EVIDENCE FROM TURKEY

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 21 Sayı: 3, 862 - 880, 30.09.2025

Öz

In today’s world, energy security has become a prominent topic in both political and economic discussions. However, the potential political, economic, and environmental impacts of this variable have been the subject of relatively few studies. Accordingly, the primary aim of this study is to examine the effect of renewable energy consumption (REN) on energy security risk (ESR) for Turkey, using time series data from 1980 to 2018. The period under review is limited to 1980-2018, based on data availability. Additionally, the impact of economic growth (GDP) and foreign direct investment (FDI) on ESR is also investigated. These effects were first tested with the ARDL approach, and robustness checks were conducted using FMOLS, DOLS, and CCR estimators. The study’s main contribution to the literature lies in the limited number of international studies examining the relationship between renewable energy and energy security and, to our knowledge, the absence of such an empirical study in the Turkish context. The results indicate that REN and FDI have a negative impact on ESR in Turkey, while GDP has a positive impact. Based on these findings, policymakers in Turkey should implement policies that encourage further investment in renewable energy, thus mitigating the potential adverse outcomes associated with energy security risks.
