PRIMARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS’ KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICES IN ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION

This study aimed at investigating primary and middle school students’ knowledge and practices with regards to environmental pollution in some selected cities of Ethiopia. A descriptive survey research design was used and 1583 participants from five major cities in Ethiopia were involved. Questionnaires were used to measure the knowledge and practices. Descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage were used to analyze data. The findings revealed that majority of the students had a good knowledge about environmental pollution and had a good practice to prevent environmental pollution. More than one fourth of the students had no knowledge about the concepts. In relation to knowledge, however, 67 percent did not know as chemicals pollute the environment. With regards to each city, around 60 percent of respondents from each city had a good knowledge of concepts related to environmental pollution. Similarly, in relation practice, the finding revealed that majority of students from Addis Ababa, Diredewa, Hawassa and Jimma and a little bit lower percentage from Bahirdar had a good practice but around 30 percent of students from these cities had poor practice to prevent environmental pollution. Generally, majority of students had adequate knowledge of environmental pollution and encouraging practices in preventing pollution.
