THE WORLD OF THE THIRD GENDER: CHINESE EUNUCHS
Abstract
Eunuchism is an interesting phenomenon, which could be observed in almost every culture throughout the ages, in different forms and function. Even today, it’s preserved in various countries as a third gender. Eunuchs were a fraction of a society, which was influential in private lives, bureaucracy, religious orders, politics, judiciary system, art and different parts of social life. This paper covers the physical and characteristic traits and the tragic lives of eunuchs, who can not be ignored because of their numbers and the roles they played and who were sometimes humiliated, sometimes feared and sometimes respected. It will also cover the castration methods from antiquity to the 18th century, thet were performed on them and how those methods evolved in time.
