Öz

This study aims to explore the online betting behaviour of young adults using a qualitative research design. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 participants (11 males, 3 females) between the ages of 18 and 30 residing in Sakarya, Turkey. The data were analysed using thematic analysis, which revealed four main themes: "initiation and withdrawal dynamics", "psychological and social consequences", "economic consequences", and "struggles with addiction and seeking support". The findings suggest that online betting is not just a form of entertainment or income for young adults, but also a means of coping with stress, experiencing a sense of control and fulfilling a sense of social belonging. Economic difficulties, emotional fluctuations and social isolation were found to reinforce the continuation of betting behaviour. Although many participants expressed a desire to quit, feelings of shame, fear of stigma and a lack of adequate support systems prevented them from seeking help. This study provides an in-depth, multidimensional understanding of online betting behaviour among young adults and contributes to the fields of social work, youth studies and mental health.
