Sociological Foundations of Regenerative Planning: Identity, Trauma, and Renewal Processes in Post-Conflict Cities

Wars inflict profound socio-spatial damages on cities, including collective trauma, identity erosion, and social capital loss, alongside physical destruction. Post-war urban reconstruction literature focuses predominantly on physical restoration, lacking comprehensive models that integrate the sociological dimensions of destruction. To bridge this theoretical gap, this study presents an original conceptual model translating the abstract sociological foundations of regenerative planning into analytical parameters. Conducted via the PRISMA-ScR protocol, this systematic scoping review examines identity construction, trauma healing, and social renewal in post-war cities through descriptive analysis and thematic coding. The regenerative approach is positioned as a restorative mechanism centering collective memory to transform trauma into social cohesion. The study’s distinct conceptual contribution is introducing the term “memory acupuncture” to literature, denoting targeted, small-scale socio-cultural interventions in traumatic spaces. A comparative thematic synthesis of Sarajevo, Mosul, Mogadishu, and Gaza demonstrates that participatory, memory acupuncture-based micro-interventions restructure cities both physically and socially; conversely, lacking regenerative planning perpetuates trauma and identity erosion. This study offers a tangible theoretical and practical guide for post-conflict planning policies.

Rejeneratif Planlamanın Sosyolojik Temelleri: Savaş Sonrası Kentlerde Kimlik, Travma ve Yenilenme Süreçleri

Öz

Savaşlar, kentlerde fiziksel yıkımın yanı sıra kolektif travma, kimlik erozyonu ve sosyal sermaye kaybı gibi derin sosyo-mekânsal tahribatlar yaratmaktadır. Savaş sonrası kentsel rekonstrüksiyon literatürü çoğunlukla fiziksel onarıma odaklanmakta, yıkımın sosyolojik boyutlarını bütünleştiren kapsayıcı modellerden yoksun kalmaktadır. Bu çalışma, kuramsal boşluğu doldurmak üzere rejeneratif planlamanın soyut sosyolojik temellerini analitik parametrelere dönüştüren özgün bir kavramsal model sunmayı amaçlamaktadır. PRISMA-ScR protokolüyle yürütülen bu sistematik kapsamlı derlemede; betimsel analiz ve tematik kodlama yoluyla savaş sonrası kentlerde kimlik inşası, travma onarımı ve toplumsal yenilenme süreçleri ele alınmıştır. Rejeneratif yaklaşım; kolektif hafızayı merkeze alan ve travmaları sosyal uyuma dönüştüren restoratif bir mekanizma olarak konumlandırılmıştır. Çalışmanın özgün kavramsal katkısı, travmatik mekânlara yönelik hedefli ve küçük ölçekli sosyo-kültürel müdahaleleri ifade eden “hafıza akupunkturu” kavramının literatüre kazandırılmasıdır. Saraybosna, Musul, Mogadişu ve Gazze örnekleri üzerinden yapılan karşılaştırmalı tematik sentez; katılımcı ve hafıza akupunkturu temelli mikro-müdahalelerin kentleri toplumsal olarak da yeniden yapılandırdığını, bu yaklaşımın yokluğunda ise kimlik erozyonunun kalıcılaştığını ortaya koymaktadır.
