Gerek Türkçe gerekse de yabancı literatürde AB’nin politik ontolojisi ve işleyişine ilişkin olarak çok sayıda çalışma yapılmıştır/yapılmaktadır. Kimi araştırmacılara göre AB, üye devletlerin egemenlikten kaynaklı yetkilerini bir üst-birime devrettiği ulus-üstü bir yapılanmadır. Kimilerine göre ise hükümetler-arası bir rejimdir. Özellikle Soğuk Savaş sonrası dönemde AB, (yeni) imparatorluk, orta çağcılık, (çok-düzeyli) yönetişim, işlevsel çoklunetworkler, farklılaşmış bütünleşme veyahut değişken geometri gibi çeşitli modeller bağlamında ele alınmıştır. Belirtilen modeller, AB’nin dünya politikasında nasıl konumlandırılması gerektiğine ilişkin girişimlerdir.
