Developing an attitude scale towards private schools: A validity and reliability study

Abstract

This study was conducted in order to develop a Likert type scale to determine the attitudes of public school teachers towards private schools. The working group of research consists of 511 teachers working at 29 public schools in Istanbul, Kartal selected by random sampling. Applications were conducted during the 2014-2015 school year. First of all, it was aimed to develop an assessment instrument that measures the attitudes of teachers towards private schools. As a result of Lawshe analysis, the scale consisting of 55 items were administered to the 512 public school teachers. Next, principal component analysis and factor analysis were conducted in order to determine construct validity and a scale with 26 items and two sub-dimensions (negative image and prestige) was optained. To calculate reliability, the Cronbach’s was calculated as α_T=.84. For the sub-dimensions, the Cronbach’s coefficients were determined between as Cronbach’s α=.92, for negative image sub-dimension and Cronbach’s α=.86 for prestige sub-dimension. On the other hand, it was found that item-total and item-remainder correlations were significant and the items were distinctive. The correlations between factors were found significant. Acquired data confirms that the scale is valid and reliable. In the second phase of research, the attitudes of public school teachers were examined with Private School Attitude Scale. The asquired data was analysed by SPSS 21.0 statistical package. The total scores and sub-dimension scores of public school teachers were compared according to demographic variables. As a result of the research, it was determined that the public school teachers’ attitudes towards private schools are negative and related suggestions were presented.

Özel okullara yönelik bir tutum ölçeğinin geliştirilmesi: Geçerlik ve güvenirlik çalışması

Öz

Bu çalışma devlet okulu öğretmenlerinin özel okullara yönelik tutumlarını belirlemek için Likert tipi bir ölçek geliştirmek amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu İstanbul ili Kartal ilçesinde tesadüfi oransız küme örneklem yöntemi ile seçilen 29 adet Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı’na bağlı resmi devlet okulunda görev yapan 511 öğretmen oluşturmaktadır. Uygulamalar 2014-2015 eğitim öğretim yılında gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmada öncelikli olarak özel okullara yönelik tutumları ölçen bir ölçme aracı geliştirmek hedeflenmiştir. 5 hakemden gelen değerlendirmeler Lawshe analizi analizi ile yapılan kapsam geçerliği işlemi sonucu elde edilen bilgiler ışığında elde edilen 55 maddelik taslak ölçek 512 öğretmene uygulanmıştır. Ardından, ölçeğin yapı geçerliliğini belirlemek amacıyla temel bileşenler analizi ile faktör analizi gerçekleştirilmiş ve 26 maddeden oluşan, toplam varyansın %84’ünü açıklayan, 2 faktörlü (olumsuz imaj, prestij)  bir yapı edilmiştir. Ölçeğin güvenirliğini (iç tutarlılık) ölçmek için yapılan analizlerde ölçeğin tümü için Cronbach’s α_T=.84; olumsuz imaj alt boyutu için Cronbach’s α=.92, prestij alt boyutu için Cronbach’s α=.86 olduğu saptanmıştır. Diğer yandan madde-toplam ve madde-kalan korelasyonları anlamlı ve maddelerin ayırt edici olduğu belirlenmiştir. Faktörler arası korelasyonun anlamlı olduğu saptanmıştır. Elde edilen bulgular ölçeğin geçerli ve güvenilir olduğunu doğrular niteliktedir. Araştırmanın ikinci aşamasında devlet okulu öğretmenlerinin özel okullara ilişkin tutumları incelenmiştir. Veriler SPSS 21.0 istatistik paket programı kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir.  Araştırma bulgularına göre geçerli ve güvenilir olan Özel Okul Tutum Ölçeği devlet okulu öğretmenlerinin özel okullara yönelik tutumlarını belirlemek amacıyla kullanılabilir.
