From Practice to Paradigm: A Perspective on Alternative Assessment in Turkish Early Childhood Education

Öz

This perspective study critically examines the potential of integrating alternative assessment approaches into early childhood education in Turkey, drawing on international examples and theoretical insights grounded in Vygotsky's sociocultural learning theory. It was argued that while alternative assessment has gained some visibility in Turkish educational discourse, its implementation remains fragmented and constrained by systemic challenges. These include limited teacher preparation, inadequate digital infrastructure, and the absence of coherent policy support. Rather than viewing alternative assessment as a set of tools or procedures, it was proposed a broader paradigm shift that positions it as a catalyst for educational and cultural transformation. Through this lens, it was outlined strategic directions for reform, including reimagined curricula, strengthened teacher education, inclusive digital systems, and a renewed focus on child agency and school-community collaboration. The purpose is to stimulate dialogue on how Turkey can meaningfully embrace alternative assessment as both a pedagogical and societal innovation.
