Exploring Middle School Students’ Metaphorical Perceptions Of Current Global Issues

Öz

This study aims to reveal the metaphorical perceptions of 7th and 8th-grade middle school students in a public school in Istanbul regarding the concept of “Contemporary Global Issues” (global warming, climate change, environmental pollution, wars, famine, earthquakes, etc.). Employing a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach, data were collected through a metaphor form requiring students to complete the prompt “Contemporary global issues are like … because …”. The participant group consisted of 71 students who voluntarily participated during the 2025–2026 academic year within the scope of their social studies course. The metaphors produced were analyzed using content analysis and grouped under seven main conceptual categories: (1) The Destructive Force of Chaos (25.4%), (2) The Labyrinth of Desperation (18.3%), (3) A Living Entity Out of Control: Growth and Spread (15.5%), (4) A Systematic Instrument of Torture (14.1%), (5) Lost in the Forest of Uncertainty (11.3%), (6) The Point of No Return: Irreversible Damage (8.5%), and (7) Disintegration of the Social Fabric (7.0%). The findings indicate that students predominantly perceive contemporary global issues as destructive, inevitable, uncontrollable, painful, spreading, and irreparable threats, producing almost no positive metaphors involving hope, solutions, or individual/ ollective agency. This reveals a strong tendency toward “learned helplessness” and eco-anxiety among the youth. The study emphasizes the need in social studies education to complement problem-focused approaches with solution- and action-oriented hope pedagogies, and recommends that students’ feelings of fear and helplessness be processed in safe classroom environments and transformed into constructive action.
