Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of burnout, hopelessness, depression and anxiety among research assistants working in a university hospital.
Material and Methods: 207 physicians working as research assistants were included in the research sample. Maslach Burnout Inventory, Beck Hopelessness Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory were applied to all participants through face-to-face questionnaire interviews.
Results: In our study, moderate emotional exhaustion, low level depersonalization and moderate personal achievement burnout were determined in research assistants. In addition, participants experienced low levels of hopelessness and mild levels of depression and anxiety. It has been determined that factors such as exposure to stigmatization under pandemic conditions, experiencing close loss due to COVID-19 infection, working in surgical branches, being single, considering resignation and feeling the need for psychiatric support increase burnout. Similarly, being single, having COVID-19, the thought of resignation and the need for psychological support increased the levels of hopelessness; stigmatization, thoughts of resignation and the need for support increased depression levels; the tendency to resign and the need for psychological support significantly increased anxiety levels. In addition, it was determined that there was a moderate and low-severity significant positive relationship between emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, hopelessness, depression and anxiety levels, and that there was a moderate and low-severity significant negative relationship with personal achievement level.
Conclusion: Maintaining health services effectively and with high quality is directly related to the well-being of healthcare professionals, both physically and mentally. It seems functional to take measures to protect healthcare workers, to regularly evaluate them in terms of possible mental effects, to provide social support, to plan mental health interventions and to carry out these interventions with an interdisciplinary team.
