Immediate Effects of Suboccipital Myofascial Release Technique on Cervical Proprioception, Joint Range of Motion and Balance in Young Adults: Crossover Randomized Controlled Trial

Öz

Objective: The effects of myofascial release techniques on the suboccipital region, a proprioceptive receptor-rich area, remain underexplored. This study investigates the immediate effects of the suboccipital myofascial release technique on cervical proprioception, joint range of motion, and balance in young adults Material and Methods: This randomized controlled-crossover study included 24 healthy individuals aged 18–25. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either the suboccipital myofascial release or placebo control, followed by a one-week washout to alternate intervention. The cervical proprioception was assessed through joint position error measurements, cervical range of motion using a goniometer, and balance with the SportKAT-2000, a portable computerized kinesthetic balance device. Results: The suboccipital myofascial release group showed significant improvements in cervical extension, right rotation, and left lateral flexion, along with a notable decline in backward balance scores (p<0.05). The control group exhibited improved total balance scores but reduced proprioception (p<0.05). Between-group analysis revealed greater enhancements in right rotation, left lateral flexion, and proprioception for the suboccipital myofascial release group compared to controls (p<0.05). Conclusions: The suboccipital myofascial release technique enhances cervical range of motion and proprioception and is applicable in clinical practice. Further research is warranted to explore its efficacy in impairments in balance, proprioception, and range of motion.
