The Relationship Between Cyberchondria, Healthy Lifestyle Awareness, and Health Literacy in Adults

Öz

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between cyberchondria—heightened by the growing use of the internet to access health information—and individuals’ healthy lifestyle awareness and health literacy. Although online access to health content is now easier than ever, it can lead to increased anxiety and compulsive search behaviors in some individuals. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the interplay between these three constructs. Material and Methods: A descriptive study was conducted with 244 adults aged 18 and above, using an online questionnaire via Google Forms. Participants were recruited through snowball sampling. Data collection tools included the 12-item Cyberchondria Severity Scale (CSS-12), the Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Scale, and the Health Literacy Scale (HLS-14). Data were analyzed using independent samples t-test, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, one-way ANOVA, and Spearman correlation tests. Results: No significant differences were found in the scale scores based on gender, marital status, income, education, employment, alcohol use, chronic illness presence, or internet access device (p>0.05). However, age, occupation, smoking, internet usage time, type of chronic disease, and BMI significantly affected scale scores (p <0.05). Healthy lifestyle awareness scores were influenced by adherence to health professionals’ advice on physical activity, nutrition, and stress management. A weak but significant positive correlation was found between cyberchondria and both healthy lifestyle awareness (r=0.141, p=0.028) and health literacy (r=0.228 p<0.001). A stronger correlation was noted between healthy lifestyle awareness and health literacy (r=0.342) (p<0.001). Conclusion: Cyberchondria, healthy lifestyle awareness, and health literacy are positively associated. Strengthening health education and literacy may reduce the risks associated with excessive online health information seeking.
