Psychosocial Effects of Group Exercise Synchronized with Music in Older Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Öz
Objective: Aging is a period characterized by declines in physical capacity and psychosocial functioning; therefore, maintaining quality of life becomes increasingly important. Various exercise approaches are used to support psychological well-being during this period. This study aimed to examine the effects of group exercises synchronized with music on depression and quality of life in older adults living in a nursing home.
Materials and Methods: A total of 29 volunteers aged 65 years and older participated in the study. Participants were randomly assigned to either the music-synchronized exercise group or the control group. In the intervention group, exercises were performed accompanied by music, whereas the same exercises were performed without music in the control group. Assessments were conducted before and after the intervention using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-30) and the SF-36 Quality of Life Scale.
Results: The mean age of the intervention group was 75.20±6.61 years, while the mean age of the control group was 71.43±3.99 years. After the intervention, a significant improvement was observed in the GDS scores of the intervention group (p<0.05). However, no significant differences were found in the SF-36 quality of life scores in either group between the pre- and post-intervention assessments (p>0.05).
Conclusion: The findings suggest that group exercises synchronized with music may have positive effects on depressive symptoms in older adults. Incorporating music into exercise programs may enhance emotional well-being and contribute to supporting mental health in elderly individuals
