New Approaches in Pain Control Following Cardiac Surgery
Abstract (≤250 WORDS)
Coronary artery bypass graft surgery known as high-risk is the most frequently performed one among open heart surgeries all over the world, while it is reported that chronic pain syndrome develops in patients after cardiac surgery. Although usage of opioid and non-opioid analgesics among pharmacological implementations is standard for reducing the pain after heart surgery, concomitant usage of opioids and paracetamol medicines is a common approach. In the non-pharmacological methods of pain control; intercostal, paravertebral, epidural and spinal anaesthetic blocks are proposed to be suitable analgesic methods, they are reported to decrease the need of narcotics to control pain after cardiac surgery and to positively impact patient outcomes in reducing the severity of pain. Nurses who have an important role in the healthcare team should inform patient and their families about effective pain management, should follow pain-treatment-related and pain-related complications and current approaches about pain treatment, and should base their practices on evidence.
