Objective: This study was planned to investigate the relationship between chronotype, sleep quality, and night eating syndrome in university students.
Material and Methods: A total of 300 students aged between 19 and 30 participated in the study. Socio-demographic characteristics, dietary habits, Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Night Eating Questionnaire data were collected through faceto-face interviews. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 26 statistical package.
Results: According to individuals’ chronotypes, 18.3% were morning type, 64.0% intermediate type, and 17.7% evening type. Regarding sleep quality, 97.0% of the participants had poor sleep quality, while 3.0% had good sleep quality. According to the Night Eating Questionnaire, 98.3% of individuals did not exhibit night eating syndrome. Evening type students had higher median values in the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Night Eating Questionnaire compared to morning and intermediate types (p<0.001). There was a weak negative correlation between the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (r=-0.367, p<0.001), and a moderate negative correlation between the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire and the Night Eating Questionnaire (r=-0.450, p<0.001).
Conclusion: The chronotype has been observed to be an essential factor influencing individuals’ sleep patterns and eating behaviors. Therefore, it is crucial to take appropriate measures to improve the sleep patterns of university students and promote healthy eating habits.
Keywords: Body mass index, night eating syndrome, circadian rhythm, sleep.
