The main issue in the Christological debates that form the basis of Christian theology revolves around the nature of Jesus Christ and his relationship with God the Father. These debates, which began very early on, have reached a certain level in Christian theology over the centuries that have passed, leading to the emergence of the system of deity that we now call the Trinity. In this troubled process leading up to the Trinity, we know that there are various conceptions of God that have not yet 'matured'. In this article, we argue that Christians had a dual conception of God before the trinitarian conception of God that we call the Trinity emerged in Christian theology. Although the dualistic conception of God is not a standard belief held by all Christians, we can find traces of it in the texts of the most important church fathers. In this study, we have focused on the question of how Christianity, which inherited a strict monotheistic Jewish heritage, was able to accept a dualistic understanding of God. In seeking an answer to this question, we have argued that there were different Jewish interpretations in the geography where Christianity was born, and that Hellenistic Judaism, in particular, had a significant influence on early Christian theology. We say that in early Christianity there were two different binitarian conceptions of God that were accepted pre-trinitarian, the first of which refers to a structure consisting only of God the Father and Jesus Christ. In the second type of binitarian understanding of God, we can say that there is a relatively more complex/indeterminate character consisting of God the Father on one side of the Godhead system and the identity of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit on the other side. In this article, we will show that there are examples of both types of the binary Godhead in the texts of the church fathers with the references we bring in this process.
