A Survey about the Reflection of Occult Beliefs and Practices of Various Cultures on Turkish-Islamic Culture

Abstract

Humankind has been so curious about the secrets of the universe until the beginning of the time. They have always thought that the universe is governing by a secret power and the dark side of the universe cannot be understand without a systematic research. These thoughts and the desire of man to understand the secret led humankind to search about the nature of these secrets and from this quest of the humankind, Occultism has appeared. The term “occultism” is derived from the Latin verb “occulo” which means “conceal”. Occultism is the general name of knowledges which cannot be known and understood by ordinary people and needs some basic esoteric knowledges and thoughts of some implicit thought and faith systems. These knowledges aim to understand and take over the unknown secrets of the universe.

Occultism has too many schools like Magic, Alchemy, Numerology, Astrology, Demonology, Palmistry, Gnosticism, Shamanism, Theosophy, Kabbala, Spiritualism. These schools are widely found in the writings of Muslim scholars. Numerology can be examined in the context of doctrines about the sanctity and mystery of numbers; Astrology in the context of beliefs about the influence of celestial bodies and their orbits on human life; Alchemy in the context of beliefs and practices about mystical powers and mysteries of mines; and Demonology in the context of relations of the jinn and the demons with humans. Instead of examining all of these schools thoroughly, we will outline the reflections of some of those in various cultures and areas. After that, we will investigate how those schools are adopted in Turkish-Islamic folk beliefs with some examples. Another aim of this study is to be a guide to those who thinks to study about Occultism which is not valued enough among the academicians in Turkiye.
