THE EFFECT OF USING DIFFERENT KINDS OF ICE- BREAKERS ON UPPER-INTERMEDIATE LANGUAGE LEARNERS' SPEAKING ABILITY

Abstract

In this study the effects of ice breakers as a classroom activity on Foreign Language Speaking Production has been investigated. Participants of the study were one hundred Turkish EFL students from the American Culture Institute, Erzurum, Turkey who were selected after following the English standard speaking test (IELTS). Afterwards, they were divided into two groups in random manner; the experimental group and the control group. Students of both groups had to speak about some topics that were considered as their pre-tests and post-tests. The scores were analyzed through SPSS by applying normality test, correlation test, and independent sample t-test. The findings revealed that participants in the experimental group, who had received the treatments on ice breakers, significantly enhanced better performance in a speaking test

KAYNAŞTIRMA ETKİNLİKLERİ KULLANIMIN TÜRK İLERİ-ORTA DÜZEY İNGİLİZCE ÖĞRENCİLERİNİN KONUŞMA BECERİLERİNE ETKİSİ

Öz

Bu çalışma, yabancı dil konuşma üretiminde bir sınıf aktivitesi olarak kaynaştırma tekniklerinin etkisini araştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu etkileri göstermek için IELTS sınavı müteakip Türkiye, Erzurum Amerikan Kültür Derneği’nden İngilizce’yi yabancı dil olarak öğrenen yüz Türk öğrenci seçildi. Daha sonra bu öğrenciler kaynaştırma tekniklerinin uygulamasını alan deney grubu ve plasebo alan kontrol grubu olarak rastgele ikiye bölündü. Kendileri için ön test ve art test olarak düşünülen bazı konular hakkında konuşmak zorundaydılar. Puanlar; normallik testi, korelasyon testi ve bağımsız örnek test uygulanarak SPSS aracılığıyla analiz edildi. Bulgular kaynaştırma teknikleri uygulamaları alan deney grubu katılımcılarının konuşma testinde önemli derecede daha iyi performans gösterdiklerini açığa çıkardı.
