The aim of this study is to determine surgical nurses’ experiences regarding patient safety. This study, whose data was collected with a phenomenological approach, which is one of the qualitative research patterns, has been conducted between January and February 2020 with the participation of 9 nurses working in the general surgery service of an education and research hospital. Ethics committee and institution permissions have been obtained before the study. “Introductory Information Form” and semi-structured “Interview Form” have been used for data collection. The analyzes have been carried out using Giorgi's phenomenological method analysis. The data obtained from the research consist of 5 main and 6 sub-themes. Main theme and sub-themes are; 1. What is Patient Safety?, 2. Patient Safety in Surgical Process (Patient Safety in Pre-Operative Process and Patient Safety in Post-Operative Process), 3. Patient Safety and Problems (Responsible Person During the Problem and Problematic Issues and Precautions), 4. Patient Safety and Nursing Practices (Safe Surgical Checklist Use and Recommendations for Practices) and 5. Experiences. Participants have reported patients to experience frequent falls, especially in the bathroom and toilet, and frequent wrong drug administration and fluid transfusions during the perioperative process. It was stated that, in order to prevent these situations; 4-leaf clover was hung on the patient's head, the bed borders were removed, the Itaki Fall Risk Scale was filled, and the patients and their relatives were informed about the situations that would threaten the patient's safety. It may be recommended that nurses in surgical units shall receive the necessary trainings in nursing interventions related to patient safety and the legal aspects of these interventions.
